The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
