Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She added that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the mission, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The fully automated spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of outer space.
