Elden Ring's Rolling Dodge Warrants Praise

If you've played this acclaimed title, or most other action-adventure title, chances are you're acquainted with the glorious feature called the “rolling dodge.” This evasion technique allows your character to execute a forward, sideways, or backward somersault to evade incoming harm and create distance from foes. Sounds handy, wouldn't you say?

The dodge roll, nevertheless, has attracted a lot of flak, and not just because of the rolling; it's been called dumb, a easy way out, and an unrealistic move — and sometimes, I see the point. Picture me rolling around nearby enemy groups in another popular RPG — untouchable! But this game's dodge roll represents the evasion to outdo all previous rolling dodges, and I'll tell you why.

Regarding this title, the designers identified an excellent method to respond to all views that the move is not challenging enough: merely bestow each opponent overwhelming force, multiply it, and each player character who ventures close them will feel immensely thankful because of their evasion move, I'm no exception. When the stakes are this high, evading successfully seems like an accomplishment, instead of an unfair advantage.

No different defensive move in this RPG matches this feeling of accomplishment and consistency, since rapid sprints don't cover much ground and blocking attempts are easily broken by tough opponents. A person once suggested leaping as the primary Elden Ring dodging technique, but aside from not providing ideal movement, It wasn't clear to me taking a crushing hit might boost my prospects of defeating bosses (lack of skill, maybe).

Mastering the Technique

But even though the dodge roll offers respite in an otherwise brutal game, it requires practice. First of all, the game's dodge roll merely initiates a frame of protection following you release the evasion key, which hinders a quick, panicky escape from dangerous scenarios. Moreover, although it may transport you away from enemies, it's far more effective to utilize it as a moment to move nearer, ideally to their rear, and strike blows. And, finally, it remains necessary to comprehend and predict enemy attacks, because rolling prematurely of an extended wind-up might terminate your protection prior to the hit connecting… resulting in severe damage.

A Well-Designed Feature

Even though rolling-dodging in quick succession may look a bit ridiculous (kudos to the Witcher anew), this isn't really an option in the game. Naturally, that still doesn't make it a believable fighting maneuver — the very cause why it would be terrifying to witness it in a title like a realism-focused RPG — but this is a flashy fantasy title we're talking about, so who cares?

Comparable to any well-executed rolling dodge, the game's dodge motion is spruced up with a little somersault-y hop at the start, providing a dynamic sensation instead of placing the avatar onto the ground. According to your loadout, the technique may seem super agile or moderately cumbersome, but it remains quicker and smoother than the rolling dodges found in Dark Souls. Admittedly, you could plant your large weapon in the dirt if you're carrying one, but that's your responsibility for not just playing a crossbow (Just kidding — avoid using Elden Ring using ranged options).

Optimal Harmony

The game's dodging mechanic creates the perfect balance between challenge and opportunity, providing prospects of success while threatening to take that hope away at the smallest error. Perfect this move, and you'll obtain not just victory, but satisfaction.
